Ontario Electricity Rebate – 2019

The Ontario Ministry of Energy has announced the introduction of the Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER) for multi-unit residential complexes, households, farms, long-term care homes and small businesses.

Starting November 1, 2019, the Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER) has replaced what was previously known as the 8% Provincial Rebate. The change from the 8% Provincial Rebate to the Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER) is a key part of the government’s commitment to strengthen transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility in the electricity sector.

What’s Changing?

As a result of this new rebate, you will notice some changes on your bill. The electricity line on your bill will increase, the new Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER) will provide a high percentage rebate, and the average residential bill will increase in line with inflation. Previously, customers received a reduction on their bill that was built into the price of the electricity. By removing the built-in reduction and 8% rebate, you will be able to see the true cost of electricity on your bill and the full value of your Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER), if eligible.

Who is Eligible?

All ratepayers who were eligible for the previous 8% rebate will be eligible to receive the Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER) as of November 1, 2019.

Under the new rate, larger multi-unit complexes that are not primarily residential are not eligible. This includes, but is not limited to: multi-unit complexes that have fewer than 50% residential units, hotels, motels, resorts, lodges, cottages, cabins, inns, trailer parks, tourist homes, bed and breakfast vacation establishments or vacation homes, hospitals, universities, colleges, and other entities that provide post-secondary education. Larger multi-unit complexes that use over 250,000 kilowatt-hours per year, and whose demand is over 50 kilowatts, will be required to provide a notice to their local distribution company by January 31, 2020 in order to receive the rebate beyond February 1, 2020.
